Postcard from Verona

Here is another "postcard" view of the town. This is the beautiful panorama you may enjoy if you drive upon the "Torricelle" hills, a few minutes from the city centre.

Cute balcony

Isn't it a sweet balcony? I love every detail here, the rusty iron, the mossy stone, the simple terracotta vases, the old paint on the shutters...
Yet another hidden corner of Veronetta district!

Street scene with strawberries and a Vespa!

Sunny morning, a few days ago. I have just left the Church of Santa Maria in Organo and my head is still spinning for all the beauty I tried to take in (please see my posts of the church!!!) and photograph (ceilings included...).
I am on Via Carducci here, a busy place, with many shops and people walking by, like this girl with a big tray full of strawberries...mmmhh, I'd fancy a nice cup of strawberries and cream, fragole e panna!

You will forgive me for (again) breaking the rules and posting another photo...I spotted this lovely pale blue Vespa coming right into the street and I just wanted to show it to you, as it is, with no doubts, an italian icon!

Wisteria

Walking home, in a warm spring morning, a light breeze carried the creamy smell of wisteria. I turned my head towards the entrance of an ancient palace and I froze in delight. The columned courtyard was literally surrounded by an explosion of soft lilac flowers that framed the windows. I smiled in astonishment and smelled the strong, hypnotizing scent...

The white chair

Ponte Navi junction. What really caught my attention here is the white chair (click on the photo to enlarge it) on a tiny, tiny balcony, where a woman is sitting as if she was in the middle of the countryside, rather than at a busy traffic light in Veronetta.

Church of S. Maria in Organo #4

I can't change subject. I was so stunned by the beauty of this little church that I can't help showing you some of the (many) picturese I took. I find this one particularly interesting: there are plenty of details (I suggest you click on the photo to enlarge it) like the beautiful worn floor, the columns, the paintings (every single inch of the walls and ceilings is remarkably painted), the light.
But I want to point out that marble plaque on the left on which is marked the level that reached the waters on the day of one of the most dramatic floods of the river Adige, the 17th september 1882. There are several similar stones scattered in town marking the water levels on different dates (if I am not wrong, the worst was this one of 1882) and whenever I see one, I can't but shiver thinking of what a nightmare it must have been...

Church of S. Maria in Organo #3

They are not paintings but woden inlays! My astonishment, as I visited this chuch the other day, grew more and more as I explored the choir, right behind the altar. In the XVI century, a monk called Giovanni from Verona executed one of the most outstanding inlay work.
Perspectives of buildings and furniture, allegories and charachters, objects and still-life make a rare example of the kind. (his works are also in the sacristy, about which I posted the day before yesterday). Giorgio Vasari included Giovanni da Verona in his "Vite" (Life of the most eminent painters, sculptors and architects).
If you'll ever come to Verona, make sure you visit this beautiful church!

Church of S. Maria in Organo

Vasari defined it as the most beautiful sacristies in Italy. I must say that it is really impressive!
The paintings are vibrant and the wooden work is just spectacular: even the tiniest detail of the inlays is a masterpiece.
Out of the most classical tourist routes, the Church Santa Maria in Organo was built in 1117 after an earthquake...read more!!

Bad weather coming

Afternoon stroll, Via Manin. Weather condition: partially cloudy, chilly wind.
I love this light, when it's dark cloudy but only partially, thus letting rays of sun enlighten the buildings against the metallic sky.
