The Duomo

The Duomo is the Cathedral of Verona, called Santa Maria Matricolare. It was built on the site of two paleo-christian churches destroyed by an earthquake in 1117. The "new" building was consacrated on the 13rd of september, 1187.

Church of Santa Anastasia

Church of Santa Anastasia is one of the most beautiful churches of Verona, a masterpiece of gothic art built between 1280 and 1400.
Here is a detail of the beautifully painted ceiling and the organ (1625) of the Miniscalchi altar, decorated in the XVth century.
I lack of information about the sculpture, which was, initially, the object of my photo.

Polished bronze

Walking through the narrow alleys of the Filippini district I was captured by the looks of this wooden door. It seems quite old with nicely layered varnish and one perfectly polished bronze handle and one totally blackened, just like the two key holes.

San Lorenzo

Statue of Saint Lorenzo, placed above the portal that leads to the homonymous church.
The origins of the church go back to the IV century AD. Unfortunately it was almost completely destroyed by a strong earthquake in 1117 and rebuilt during the XII century.
The church is indeed a jewel of the romanic style, read more here!

Villa Novare #3

I hope you won't mind me posting more photos from Villa Novare... I like them so much I can't help myself...
This is a detail of the private church's entrance.

Villa Novare #2

I liked so much this place and I want to show you some details of the statues. Obviously I couldn't go inside on the private lawn but I could admire the facade of the little private church whose entrance opens directly on the path in front of the villa's gates.
This is only one of the many ancient villas scattered throughout the country around Verona. Most of them are private but some can be visited: check this site Ville Venete Net
(I linked the page of the villas in the province of Verona but if you go to the home page you can find the villas of the whole region).

Snow!

Yes, it's quite an event here. It didn't use to be but in the last couple of decades, according to the veronesi, snowfalls have become less in number and in snow height. For me, born on the sea shore of southern Tuscany, any snowfall is magic.
Saturday morning a white blanket of five centimeters covered the city. Not much for many of you but of great impact for us!

An interesting corner!

This photo sums up a few important details about Verona:

1. Valerio Catullo, was born in Verona - about I a.C., famous poet of his time,
he was probably the first veronese to become famous. Our airport is named
    after him.
2. The beautiful marble ornament (a Siren) is one of the many roman
    stones scattered in town.
3. Fashion, not a detail here in Verona but a big business. Lots of famous
designers opened their flag shops in the three top shopping streets (this one is     Corso Portoni Borsari and the famous designer is Etro).
4. It's raining again!

Windows, arches and other details...

I took this photos standing on one of the few staircases in town, in fact, you can see that my view is higher than the street below. I liked this view because it contains a huge variety of windows, arches, columns and oter interestning details.
As I often suggest, just stop for a minute and look better!

Ps: I took this pic a few days ago, when there was a bright sun. Now it's grey and damp: it's been raining for two days and more rain is coming...

Secret corner

Another sunny morning gave me the chance to photograph this secluded corner in the heart of town. I had just sipped my coffee in a new café and bought some lovely bread. Next to the panificio a little marble staircase leads to a tiny square from which two little roads depart.
This is one of them: it is narrow and bends twice among the ancient houses built on roman remains (some of them visible in a few public places), and leads, in a few steps, to the Corso Portoni Borsari.

I love the monochromatic paintings, the rounded shutters, the white flowers: I find enchanting every detail of this close up and every step of this vicolo...
